In the 19th and 20th centuries this portrait was identified as Catherine Howard, the 5th wife of Henry VIII, from whom no authentic portrait is known. This identification has now been discredited. The woman more likely is a member of the Cromwell family, who were longtime owners of this portrait. She might be Elizabeth Seymour, daughter-in-law of Thomas Cromwell, and sister to Jane Seymour, 3rd wife of Henry VIII. Elizabeth Seymour was a maid to Queen Anne Boleyn (executed 1536), then lady-in-waiting to four more of Henry's succession of wives, including her sister Jane, who died in childbirth in 1537.
