Funchal, Morning Sun

Watercolor on paper

18 EJP 77, lower left corner.

In the foreground can be seen the Convento das Mercês (demolished around 1910), probably seen from the veranda of Hotel Reids Santa Clara. Starting at its right corner, Rua das Mercês (upper tract) with its many manors and noble houses. Up in the hills the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte. The tree line in the center - maple trees, most probably - marks the course of Ribeira de Santa Luzia, in the nowadays Rua 31 de Janeiro, then Rua das Árvores (Trees street). [Wikipedia]
