My brother Daniel has written a piano piece to the poem of Edgar Allen Poe. The dramaturgy of Daniel’s piece fascinated me by the unexpected tone of its resolution. While nostalgic and aching, his music scintillated with hope. Daniel made an active choice for the protagonist’s resurrection. In this portrait I aimed to capture his inner resolve in the moment of this daring choice surrounded by the agony of fighting forces. One has to walk the Razor’s Edge in order to demand resurrection. In order to write this score for Annabel Lee, I believe, my brother had to walk The Edge, hovering over the abyss of eternal despair when beckoning Annabel Lee into the physicality of the light. I believe it to be true because drawing Daniel’s portrait I, myself too, vicariously relived this balancing act when carving out light in the blackness on my charcoals.
