Desert Walk
40.6 x 55.9 cms | 16 x 22 ins
Oil on canvas
Desert Walk is an inherently tense scene - imagine if you were balancing over a spiky outcropping that was four times your size! To play up the theatrics even more, I lit the scene as if it was in the center ring of a circus big top: The strong center spotlighting contrasted with the dark background adds a severe look to the performance.
The cacti were chosen for the visual interest they could bring - each one has a different coloration and spine appearance. The weathered terracotta posts were created with my oldest brushes, ones that can no longer provide crisp lines but make for dandy texturing of weathered-looking surfaces such as these.
