Atonement is inspired by the Greek myth, “Coronis.” In this story, a white raven is left to guard one of the god Apollo’s lovers. When the bird fails in his undertaking, an enraged Apollo scorches the bird, turning him black. According to the myth, ravens are black to this day as a result. In this image, the raven seeks atonement for his misdeeds - the white feather by his tail is a reminder of what used to be. The raven’s act of contrition will be to free the caged bird - all he has to do is pull the string to set the events into motion.
