Juan Carlos Martinez is an award-winning artist, an art educator, and a specialist in traditional portraiture and figurative artwork, as well as landscape and still life. For nearly two decades his work has been featured in various publications and exhibitions around the world, and has garnered numerous awards and commissions. His work hangs in private and public collections in Canada, the US, and in Europe.
After practicing as a lawyer for a number of years, Juan finally turned his avocation of classical painting and drawing into a true vocation. In 2001 he completed an intensive five-year course of study in Toronto, Canada, and Florence, Italy, under the tutelage of renowned painter and teacher, Michael John Angel. The training was in what is now commonly known as the classical realist tradition. For over 15 years, until late in 2016, Juan was a senior instructor at Toronto’s well-known Academy of Realist Art (ARA) and also conducted workshops elsewhere in Canada and the US during that period. Today, he continues teaching via workshops on his own behalf, still at ARA as well as in other locations in Canada and the United States. Juan has authored a number of instructional articles for various publications in traditional print and in digital forums and media. His work has been the subject of numerous articles and features (listed below) in a variety of media. Juan frequently lectures on technical or art historical and other matters relating to representational art and its grand traditions.
Juan currently lives in Regina, Canada where he continually, and currently, develops his body of work and maintains an influence as a teacher and mentor, and as a commissioned portrait painter.
