{"Id":2569,"Name":"Gottfried Kallstenius","Biography":"\u003Cp\u003EGottfrid Kallstenius was born at\u0026nbsp;V\u0026auml;stervik, Sweden. His brother\u0026nbsp;Evald Kallstenius\u0026nbsp;[sv]\u0026nbsp;(born 1868) was a zoologist and member of the ill-fated\u0026nbsp;Bj\u0026ouml;rling\u0026ndash;Kallstenius Expedition. After preparatory studies with\u0026nbsp;Edvard Pers\u0026eacute;us, he was admitted to the\u0026nbsp;Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts\u0026nbsp;in 1884 and graduated in 1888 after receiving two medals for his work.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EIn 1891, he married the painter\u0026nbsp;Gerda Roosval. Shortly after, he was awarded a travel scholarship and they spent a summer in Paris, completing their educations. From there, they went to live in\u0026nbsp;Le Pouldu, in\u0026nbsp;Brittany, where\u0026nbsp;Paul Gauguin\u0026nbsp;had spent the previous summer. After about a year, they returned to Paris where he had further studies with\u0026nbsp;Rapha\u0026euml;l Collin. Eventually, they settled in the Swedish artists\u0027 colony at\u0026nbsp;Grez-sur-Loing. In 1893 and 1894 they visited Italy, where he developed an interest in ornamentation and decoration.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EFrom 1898 to 1904, for an artist\u0027s fee and a share of tuition, he taught classes in decorative art. He became a full-time teacher in 1910, after failing to receive a professorship in landscape painting. In 1912, he was appointed a Vice-Professor. During this period he abandoned his earlier\u0026nbsp;Realist\u0026nbsp;styles.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe performed several large works; notably, an altarpiece in V\u0026auml;stervik and murals at the\u0026nbsp;Nordstjernan\u0026nbsp;building, as well as mosaics at the\u0026nbsp;Konstn\u0026auml;rshuset. Later, he did a large landscape painting for the foyer at the\u0026nbsp;Royal Dramatic Theatre.\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EHe also wrote several texts on oil painting, including\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EOljem\u0026aring;leriet, f\u0026auml;rgstoff och bind\u0026auml;mnen\u003C/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;(Oil Painting, Dyes and Binders, 1913),\u0026nbsp;\u003Cem\u003EHandbok i oljem\u0026aring;lning\u003C/em\u003E\u0026nbsp;(Handbook of Oil Painting, 1915) and\u0026nbsp;Konsten, dess v\u0026auml;sen och betydelse\u0026nbsp;(\u003Cem\u003EArt: Its Essence and Meaning\u003C/em\u003E, 1931).\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp\u003EMost of his later life was spent with his wife Gerda at a villa they had built in 1906 designed by the architect\u0026nbsp;Gustaf Petterson\u0026nbsp;[sv]\u0026nbsp;(1887\u0026ndash;1925).
