Raised by creative parents, his father, writer, director and filmmaker Fred Baker and his mother Barbara, a talented and published knitwear designer. Garin attended the high school of Art \u0026amp; Design in the early 1970\u0027s where he studied with realist painters Max Ginsburg and Irwin Greenberg as an original member of the \u0022Old Hat Club\u0022. With much encouragement, he continued his painting from life studies at the Art Students league under the teachings of Ted Seth Jacobs, Harvey Dinnerstein, Burt Silverman, David Laffel and Frank Mason. He went to study at Pratt Institute under scholarship where he found strong resistance from his fine art professors opposed to figurative work. But Garin being focused and determined started with other traditionally minded students their own life drawing and painting groups. After graduation in 1983 he went on to show in galleries and receive several corporate commissions in addition to making a living as busy illustrator for countless advertising agencies and publishing companies. In 1990 he moved his young family to New Windsor, NY renovating a 1790 stone house, carriage house and barn eventually as his working studio. Over the last 15 years Garin has been working primarily in the \u0022Public Art Realm\u0022 as a Muralist creating large scale commissioned works for municipalities in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC, and Los Angeles. His murals are in the great traditions of Brangwyn, Cornwell and WPA era muralist of the mid 20th century. A few years ago he started an apprentiship program for young artist at his Carriage House Art Studios called Carriageart Atelier enabling them to work professionally and develop their craft. Always continuing to study and paint from life on a regular basis, Garin\u0027s Fine Art work is powerfully original. With much admiration for the Masters like Sargent, Sorolla, Repin, Kromskoi and countless others, Garin\u0027s work is extremely contemporary. His subjects are an honest portrayal using whatever means necessary towards discovering and documenting moments in his life. His work is direct and uncompromising.
