In 1727, however, he went to Italy, and at Rome became well known as a painter. He returned to Paris in 1731 and soon became a favourite in society. His picture \u003Cu\u003ERinaldo and Armida\u003C/u\u003E (1734) is now in the Louvre. He was made inspector of the Gobelins factory in 1755 and court painter in 1765, and was employed by \u003Ca href=\u0022http://www.madamedepompadour.com/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EMadame de Pompadour\u003C/a\u003E both to paint her portrait and to execute various decorative works. He died in 1770. His \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=628\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EWatteau\u003C/a\u003E-like style and graceful voluptuousness gave him the title of the Anacreon of painting, but his repute declined until recent years. The \u003Ca href=\u0022http://www.the-wallace-collection.org.uk/\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EWallace collection\u003C/a\u003E, at Hertford House, has some of his finest pictures, outside the Louvre.
