Painting is labor of love that has consumed and changed my life, exposing my work internationally, starting a nonprofit organization, studying and teaching at the Academy of Realist Art. I am as passionate about teaching as I am about  painting and learning. I long for the means to continue my education to increase my artistic literacy that I may better be able to articulate myself in my own work. I have been studying as the sole pupil of Thomas Dunlay who wishes to pass on all of his experience from his teacher R.H. Ives Gammell. Furthering my own education is of the upmost importance for the sake of being an adequate instructor for future students and generations of painters alike.

My aspirations to become as well educated as possible have lead me to become seduced with a love for materials; I make every pigment and mull every tube of paint. Long stack lead white procces,  Chinese alchemy for vermillion, and Cennini's recipe for genuine ultramarine blue, for me doing this helps breed an intimate relationship with my craft.

My long term goal is to spread knowledge, teach, start an atelier or academy of my own. Also, to establish my own work to be world reknowned and rekindle the Boston aristicratic portrait to a new glory in the beginning of the 21st century with a group of highly trained painters; strictly painted from life without any aid of photography.

Eric Johnson was born in Tampa Bay, Florida and raised in Western New York. From 2012 to 2014, he worked primarily as the founder and art instructor of a non profit organization but continued to create drawings and paintings as a self-taught artist. In 2014, after being awarded a one-year full scholarship to study in Boston at the Academy of Realist Art Boston which focused and honed his abilities. Since then, Eric has become an assistant instructor at  ARA Boston, as well a paint and pigment maker. In 2016 Eric was honored to recieve a 3rd place award from the ARC Scholarship which greatly helped continue to pursue his artistic training and carreer.  Most recently Eric has been painting as the lone apprentice of Boston painter Thomas Dunlay (prominent pupil of Ives Gammell).

Eric is currently working out of his home studio in Boston, MA where he is developing a body of work that explores his perception of the human experience along with creating a series of painting based on each pigment and its historic/ symbolic nature. He has a wide range of painting subjects including still-lives and figurative works and exclusively uses paints that he has made by hand
