At 35 years old, my journey into art came later in life than many of my peers, but because the realist tradition is one that draws from the artist’s human condition and experience, I view my age as a virtue that will help me achieve my artistic goals. After graduating with a history degree in Russia, I understood my passions were elsewhere. Having married and moved to the United States, I changed direction completely, enrolling in evening drawing and painting courses. How and why a person is drawn to a particular style of art is a difficult and deeply personal question, but from my earliest endeavours, realism was my truest form of artistic expression. Like others, I struggled to identify a school devoted to the artistic style I wanted to cultivate before finding the London Atelier of Representational Art (LARA), an oasis of like-minded artists. As a third-year full-time student at LARA, I anticipate studying there one to two more years, during which I will concentrate on improving my portraiture and figure painting skills, while continuing to hone my drawing. After finishing LARA, I also hope to enrol in short courses at other leading ateliers to gain additional perspective and experience. Ultimately, I plan to continue the realistic tradition and work both as a tutor in an atelier and as a practising artist, selling my work and promoting classical techniques to a broad audience of young artists and art consumers.
