ARC doubles scholarships this year with over $20,000 in direct scholarships to aid students at ARC Approved art academy and atelier schools, and continued tradition of making purchase awards from winners.
The Art Renewal Center is very pleased to announce the winners of the 2007 Annual Scholarship Competition. Now in its seventh year, the ARC Scholarship program has helped students from all over the world continue their studies at ARC Approved Ateliers and Schools. With this year's scholarships of $20,000 and almost $90,000 awarded to date, the Art Renewal Center strives to ensure that current and future generations of artists receive proper instruction in the traditional and classical methods of representational art.
This Year's Judges
Jacob Collins: ARC Living Master™ and Founder of and an Director of the Water Street Atelier. Jacob is a talented teacher and works as an instructor at The Grand Central Academy of Art and The Hudson River School for Landscape. His past students include Juliette Aristides and Patricia Watwood. Since receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia College in 1986, Jacob has studied at the New York Academy of Art, L'Ecole Albert Defois, and the Art Students League. He is an extraordinarily respected artist, teacher, and role model in the field of contemporary realism. Combining a technique reminiscent of the nineteenth-century American realists with a freshness of vision scarcely encountered among today's traditional painters.
Gregory S. Hedberg: Director of the Department of European Art at Hirschl & Adler Galleries in Manhattan. Gregory has curated some of the finest and most successful exhibitions with the entire art world taking notice of H&A's policy of "Exhibitions of Realist Artists Only". Greg received his BA in Art History from Princeton University and his PH.D from New York University. He is the former, Chief Curator of the Wadsworth Atheneum, and was the first professional Director of the New York Academy of Art.
Fred Ross: Current Chairman of the Art Renewal Center and well-known collector of 19th century European and Victorian paintings. Mr. Ross has achieved the reputation of being one of two acknowledged world experts on <a class="tape" target="_blank" href="/Artist/Index/7">William Bouguereau</a> and is the current President of the Bouguereau Committee. Fred received his MA in Art Education from Columbia University. Widely published, his advice and scholarship is currently sought after by museums, galleries, collectors, art historians and all the major auction houses.
This Year's Winners
First Place, with an honorarium of $4,000 has been awarded to Katherine Stone. Katherine, age 21, has been attending the Victioria School of Performing and Visual Arts in Edmonton, Canada. Instructor Juan Martinez comments that Katherine "is one of our brightest young talents and has committed herself to pursuing excellence in art." Katherine won a Certificate of Merit award in the 2006 ARC Scholarship Contest.
The Second Place awards of $2,700, go to three students this year, Stephen Bauman, Adrienne Stein, and Teresa Oaxaca. Stephen Bauman is an assistant in the Intensive Drawing Program at the Florence Academy of Art where he plans to continue his studies this year. Adrienne Stein is continuing at the Arts Students League of New York with ARC Living Master™ Frank Mason, from there she will continue her studies at the Grand Central Academy of Art. Teresa Oaxaca is currently a student at the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.
Winning the Third Place prize of $1,500 are two promising students, Shane Wolf (a fourth place ARC Scholarship winner from 2006), and Julie Tsang. Julie also netted four purchase awards as well for her Taste of Marrakesh, Minority Model, Study of Sylvia and The Legacy.
The Fourth Place prizes of $850 this year were awarded to two students, Tenya Simms who has been studying at Aristides Classical Atelier and will be attending a workshop at the Gage Academy of Art with Steven Assael, and Ryan Brown of Florence Academy of Art. The Fifth Place prize of $500 was awarded Katherine Sammons of The Waichulis Studio of Mocanaqua, Pennsylvania. Purchase Awards have been presented to the following artists: Julie Tsang for four works: The Legacy, Taste of Marrakesh, Minority Model, and Study of Sylvia, Joshua LaRock of Water Street Atelier for Melissa, David Gluck for Untitled Landscape, Kate Stone for Queen of Hearts, Katherine Simmons for Self Portrait,
