At the upper ends of the art market, the image itself is of little consequence. The Lichtensteins are a good buy because they will sell for more in a year or two. This will continue until the mystique of the
modernists has been dispelled and replaced with artists who appreciate the human condition and show it in their work. After that, the value of those paintings will simply evaporate... no one will want to buy them. Pity the person who is holding them when the game of musical chairs comes to its inevitable end.
The value of the paintings is separate from how good they are. It has more to do with what someone is willing to pay for them tomorrow.
