Writing for the Visual Arts - Florence Academy of Art
Published on April 29, 2022
September 26 - December 9
Taught remotely from the Florence campus
November 28 - December 9
In-person option in Florence
If you would like to write with mastery about figurative art, or simply further your knowledge of art history and the history of literature about art, this course will survey figurative art throughout the ages, while examining the techniques that literature has historically used to write about art.
Starting with the Ancient Greeks and Romans, progressing on to the Medieval period, the arrival of Humanism, the rediscovery of Classical forms, the establishment of the Academies during the Renaissance, and the role of the Academies through the Early Modern period, you will learn to analyze select works by their medium, composition, subject matter, and patronage, and to place them within the greater context of the long tradition of figurative art. By studying the rhetorical techniques that literature has historically used in writing about art, you will develop your writing skills through short weekly exercises, moving step-by-step from literary strategies to the organization and construction of a solid expository essay by the end of the course.
In-person Option: Students may experience the Florence Academy from within to understand how students train to become figurative painters and sculptors, while also touring the main museums, galleries, and churches of Florence, during the final 2 weeks of class.

Winslow Homer: Crosscurrents
Published on April 21, 2022
Renowned for his powerful paintings of American life and scenery, Winslow Homer remains a consequential figure whose art continues to appeal to broad audiences. This exhibition reconsiders Homer’s work through the lens of conflict, a theme that crosses his prolific career. A persistent fascination with struggle permeates his art—from emblematic images of the Civil War and Reconstruction that examine the effects of the conflict on the landscape, soldiers, and formerly enslaved people to dramatic scenes of rescue and hunting as well as monumental seascapes and dazzling tropical works painted throughout the Atlantic world. The centerpiece of the exhibition is Homer’s iconic "The Gulf Stream", a painting that reveals his lifelong engagement with charged subjects of race, geopolitics, and the environment. Featuring 88 oils and watercolors, Crosscurrents represents the largest critical overview of Homer’s art and life in more than a quarter of a century.
The exhibition runs from April 11 - July 31, 2022 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Ave, New York, NY 10028.

Vicki Sullivan News
Published on April 6, 2022
Congratulations to ARC Living Master Vicki Sullivan for winning third place in the International Artist Magazine Challenge for her painting "My Sister, My Friend".
"Children are one of my favorite subjects to paint. During the pandemic, as we were in lockdown for so many months, I was unable to have live models in the studio...I remembered a photo I had always loved of my two nieces...I decided this would make a beautiful subject for a painting. I was absolutely drawn to the look on my older niece’s face, a look of dreamy wisdom coming from such a young girl. It was that particular look and the close sisterly bond I wanted to capture in my painterly portrayal."
