 Le Ravissement de Psyche by William Bouguereau | We have recently added a letter by Eric Alexander Santoli, who has written in on what it is like to be a young artist today who looks towards the past for inspiration. "I studied one painter in particular who is a favorite on the ARC website: William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905). "What a brilliant painter", I thought and still do think even as I am writing this. His technique was superb, and his Victorian ideals satisfied me on an aesthetic level. I studied him and would only get looks of dismay when I said his name and spoke about him at school." |

| ARC is happy to announce that we have just tripled the size of the Thomas Benjamin Kennington (1856-1916) gallery and added a biography of the artist. "Born in Grimsby England on April 7,1856, Thomas Benjamin Kennington trained at an impressive line of schools including the Liverpool School of Art, the South Kensington School of Art, and finally at the Academy Julian with William Bouguereau, Jules Lefebvre, and Tony Robert-Fleury. Throughout his life he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and his work was also seen at the Royal Society of British Arts and the famous Grosvenor Gallery. ARC Living Master™ Exhibition

 Ascent by Petere Fiore | ARC Living Master™ Peter Fiore will be exhibiting in a special show at The Forge Studio and Gallery - 310 Broad Street, Milford, PA 18337 along side his son and daughter Paul and Lisa Fiore. The show is on now and will continue through August 5th. Peter Fiore (b.1955), like many landscape painters, often travels afar, yet he is just as easily transported by the ostensibly unremarkable farms and woodlands near his home in northeastern Pennsylvania. "I am interested in making the simple profound, so my own backyard can be inspirational. I just walk out my door and it's all there. By painting simply, magic happens." |

Marie Bashkirtseff Gallery Update

 | With a generous image contribution from Fonthill Press, we are happy to announce that ARC has revamped the Image Gallery of Ukrainian painter Marie Bashkirtseff (1858-1884). Fonthill Press recently published the Journal of Marie Bashkirtseff translated and edited by Katherine Kernberger. There has also been a significant biographical update to the page, that has been supplied as well. |
| Marie's devotion to beauty and the fine arts defined the focus of her brief, prolific life. In 1877 - against the wishes of family and the orders of her doctors - she moved from the temperate climate of Nice to Paris in order to study painting. She enrolled in the Academie Julian, the only art school in Paris at that time accepting women; during this period Marie also began attending meetings of "Le Droit des Femmes," the leading society of the emerging French feminist movement. At the Academie, Rodolphe Julian, the founder, and Tony Robert-Fleury took an immediate and great interest in her talent, and of the overwhelming force of her fiercely determined self. Simultaneous to her artistic development, Marie published articles regarding the Rights of Women, writing under the nom de plume of Pauline Orell. Always, in every endeavor, Marie seemed engaged in an inexorable battle with passing time, sensing from early on that her own time was short. In spite of her personal wealth and illness, she worked tirelessly - eight to twelve or more hours a day, virtually for the remainder of her life. After a relatively short period of study, M. Julian asked Marie to paint a large canvas depicting his Academie, for submission to the Salon. Her painting, L'Atelier Julian (The Studio), has long been regarded as a masterwork of La Belle Epoque. Painting by ARC Associate Living Master™ Urban Larsson Enters Museum

 | A new portrait of HM Queen Silvia has been donated to the Swedish National Portrait Gallery. The portrait was a gift from a number of corporate and private donors in honour of the Queen’s 70th birthday. It was painted earlier this year by Swedish artist Urban Larsson. It has been unveiled at Gripsholm Castle on 11 June 2013. |
| The portrait was painted from life during several session at Drottningholm Castle, Stockholm earlier this year. The portrait collection comprises around 4,600 works, with new additions every year. | |
