A Letter from Juliette

For 23 years I've taught students in the Aristides Atelier - the first of its kind in the Northwest. Now, I've brought this training online through live lectures, demonstrations, projects, critiques, and discussions.

The Atelier is a sequential and comprehensive program provided to a small community of aspiring artists. We work together taking incremental steps to build the skills necessary to create successful art. In this way, artists of the past gained mastery of the material, and by following in their path, you can gain artistic freedom.

Classical training is obtained through the slow training of eye and hand under the mentorship of someone who cares about your progress; I look forward to having you join me for this exciting opportunity.

Programs: Foundations, Core, Apprenticeship

Foundations

Overview

This program guides students from foundational drawing techniques, such as block-in and measured drawing, through advanced composition and value pattern understanding, to the intricate study of form through light and shadow. It transitions into painting with a focus on value, form, and color temperature, culminating in practical applications in still life and an exploration of historical palettes. Each step is designed to build upon the last, fostering a deep and nuanced understanding of art, enabling students to create more complex and refined works.

Structure

Throughout the year, you will be immersed in the tradition of classical atelier training. You'll progress through the curriculum with live lectures, demonstrations, working sessions, and critiques with Juliette and her team of classically-trained instructors. By working hard within a community of students with like-minded goals, you'll be able to achieve a remarkable jump in skill by the end of the year.

Schedule:

Live class will take place Monday and Wednesday beginning at 10:30 am Pacific Time for approximately 3 hours

Program resources

Your learning will be supported by a library of video demonstrations, exercises, projects, and readings, as well as a moderated community forum and chat.  Juliette may adapt the curriculum to dynamically meet the needs of the students. All sessions will take place over Zoom, and you'll have access to high-quality recordings in case you miss any sessions for unlimited replayability. The Terracotta platform makes it easy to share your work, stream demonstrations and recordings, join live sessions, and engage with the community, all on one intuitive, easy-to-use platform.

Requirements

This program is designed for all skill levels, whether you have always been interested in art but never taken the first steps, or if you are a more experienced artist seeking to begin a cohesive and sequential classical art education. Creating art requires intense focus and a stretch of uninterrupted time. This undistracted time is essential since art stubbornly exists on a different timeline than the quick pace of modern life. To make the most of the program, it is recommended to spend a minimum of 12 hours per week outside of live sessions. Each lesson includes optional advanced projects, enabling students to flexibly scale up their studies according to their personal interests and schedule.

Core

Overview

This art course guides students through figure drawing and painting, starting with basic human forms and advancing to detailed studies of light, shadow, and dynamic poses. After exploring color theory, students apply their knowledge to still life sketches, engage in alla prima for rapid painting techniques, and perfect precision in formal still life compositions. The curriculum culminates with replicating masterpieces, reinforcing foundational artistic skills.

Structure

Over the course of a year, you will be immersed in the tradition of classical atelier training. You'll progress through the curriculum with live lectures, demonstrations, working sessions, and critiques with Juliette and her team of classically-trained instructors. You'll have a one-on-one portfolio review with Juliette at the end of the program to discuss your progress and your continued education.Hard work within a community of students with like minded goals will enable you to achieve a remarkable jump in skill by the end of the year.

Schedule

Live class will take place Tuesday and Thursday for approximately 2 hours. There will be additional classes on Fridays during a portion of the first semester.

Requirements

This program is for students with some prior classical drawing & painting training who are seeking to continue with a cohesive and sequential classical art education. The creation of art requires intense focus and a stretch of uninterrupted time, which, for many of us, may be the hardest part. Yet this undistracted time is essential since art stubbornly exists on a different timeline than the quick pace of modern life. Each lesson includes optional advanced projects, enabling students to flexibly scale up their studies in accordance with their personal interests and schedule.
