Our students' feedback
Laurence (Bordeaux, France):
"The freedom and creativity that the Florence Classical Arts Academy has encouraged is special, I would do three more years if I could. Teachers who pour themselves out and with such a knowledge they want to share with us students is also a valued experience."
Alessio (Melbourne, Australia):
“There is the heavy emphasis on construction and anatomy, which is amazing because it gives you the ability to capture more of the essence of a person than you can through a photograph. It’s very comfortable to live here, with the immersive environment.”
Susan (California, USA)
“I came to Florence 8 years ago because it is a city that teaches traditional arts and crafts from the renaissance to present day. I was very inspired to come here. I attended another academy for three years, which taught me a lot about copying. I became very proficient at this but I never understood what I was doing. So I went to a lecture at the Russian school, I loved it because they taught what goes underneath the drawing.”
Our Curriculum
Students start painting and drawing from the beginning of the first year. The curriculum unfolds from the basic geometric shapes to still lives and casts, then to portraits and full body images by the end of the third year.
Our teachers supervise both painting in the morning and drawing session in the afternoon every day from Monday to Friday. Accompanied by English and Italian-speaking interpreters, they explain and demonstrate their methods to each student.
A full day each week is devoted to composition, which means creating and designing a full oil painting starting from an idea. Students work on term-long projects, going from initial abstract spot designs, through architecture, character, and oil color studies, before eventually producing a full-size drawing which can then be used as a basis for an oil painting.
Twice a year there is also an intensive Artistic Anatomy course, which is one of the cornerstone subjects. The course gives essential knowledge about structure, proportions and features of human body. It teaches direct application of anatomy information to artistic drawing.
