Overarching Philosophy at Chitra Shastra Atelier(CSA)

A valuable sentence that guides us or as we say the ‘Mantra’ at CSA is quite simply

“KNOW THY ART- KNOW THY SELF”

As every artist knows, Art is both therapeutic and meditative. The oneness that an artist experiences with their work is unparalleled, and the piece of work becomes an extension of the artist. Oneness is possible when the Mind, the Intent and the Skill is Pure. In the stillness of oneness, we discover who WE are or what the SELF is. Hence, our philosophy embraces purity of age-old classical techniques of art and the discovery of the individual.

We shall enable our students to:

(a) Have a valuable lifelong engagement with art.

(b) Be informed, be reflective and be critical practitioners of art.

(c) Be aware of the dynamic nature of art, and the need to emphasise purity of technique.

(d) Apply rigour in perfecting classical techniques.

(e) Express their imagination with confidence and competence

(f) Be sensitive to personal and cultural contexts.

(g) Be receptive to authentic classical art education.

We at CSA, strive to do this based on our rigorous 4 year syllabus that can be accessed here.(https://chitrashastra.com/programmes/portrait-drawing/). This includes Portrait Drawing (1 year), Portrait Painting (1 year), Figure Drawing ( 1 year) and Figure Painting (1 year).  Additionally, we also offer Still Life (1 year) and Construction Design (1 year) as short courses. Monthly sessions for 'brushing-up', 'practice sessions' and 'hobby sessions' for art enthusiasts are held on weekends for working professionals.  Every Sunday is dedicated to providing the ambience, space and models for  figurative nude and semi-nude drawing, to fulfill the needs for professional artists and students alike. Demonstration and interaction with experts in fine arts is held from time to time, to provide an aesthitic and diverse exposure to realistic art created by different artists.

Hence, our belief enshrines the classical drawing and painting techniques, and centres on the pursuit of truth, beauty and order. This is done through a disciplined observation of nature, and emphasises harmony, balance and proportion. Finally, we say that, at CSA, we believe that  Art reflects the Universal principles of aesthetics.

Nikhil Phadtare

Asst Teacher

I come from a small town to the city of Pune with dreams of excelling in Art. I completed my school education 2 years ago and later, enrolled into this rigorous course at CSA. With the skills acquired over the last few years, and my emotional attachment to art, I was elevated to the post of an Assistant teacher. Thus I am learning and teaching other students at the same time, and it gives me enormous satisfaction, to remain connected to my work. I have realised, that when I teach, I grow too! I hope to participate in prestigious exhibitions in the future.

Amit Shirole

Director

Pune, my home, is the city of knowledge and culture. As an Art professional, I am a continuous practioner of fine art for about 10 years now. My current responsibility is as an art educator for students of art and design. Most of the European knowledge systems in art, were not accessible to my students in India. Through teaching, I wish to explore how the finer points of realism could be applied to local subjects and topics, so that my students would be current with the finer practices of artistic anatomy in other parts of the world. Particularly, the works of Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Bridgeman, Gottfried Bammes, Colleen Barry and such masters influenced me for their mastery over artistic anatomy. My art education journey, includes a 4 year scholarship with ANI Art Academies, Waichulis, Pennsylvania USA in 2017. I completed my Diploma in 2013 and did my Masters in Fine Arts in 2022. As a professional artist, I work in the areas of Figure drawing, painting, still life and landscape. As an art educator, I have 10 years experience of teaching painting and constructive drawing. I have participated in several art exhibitions, that include The Bombay Art Society and the All India Lokmanya Tilak exhibition. It was an honour to celebrate my National award for still life in 2014, and the Chitari Foundation - Portrait Award in 2012.

Dev Jirafe

Part time Teacher

I come from a family of sculptors in a small town, and the fire for art was always burning inside me. To hone my professional skills, I came to Pune after completion of high school, to dedicate myself totally to art. For the past 2 years, I am learning portrait drawing and figure drawing. This has given me the confidence to teach other students and appreciate the breadth and depth of this magnificent subject. I am happy to be growing professionally and to be designated as a part-time teacher.
