Mary Buckman is a San Diego, California artist that has over 25 years experience working in large-scale figurative sculpture in clay and bronze. Buckman has an Associate degree in Fine Art & Sculpture along with five years Independent Honors Study in Sculpture with Trine Dixon and Ceramics with Dr. John Conrad
Author & Professor at Mesa College, San Diego, California. Much of her portfolio consists of portrait commissions, with a substantial and significant amount of public work and historical figure representation. Buckman has been reciepient of many awards exhibiting her work with the Portrait Society of America and American Women Artists. She has been a member of the National Sculpture Society for several decades and has recently been juried as an Elected Sculptor Member. Buckman teaches life sculpture classes and works on her commissions at her studio in North Park, San Diego.
Among her public works is a larger than life size bronze sculpture of California Governor Pete Wilson installed in Horton Plaza, Downtown San Diego and Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy commissioned by Cal Western School of Law, San Diego. Buckman also has two bronze relief portraits installed in the Hall of Justice, San Diego Courthouse. She was commissioned by the City of East Lansing, Michigan for her life size bronze girl “Laura” installed at the Children’s Park in East Lansing. These are only a few of the many public and private commissions she has worked on in clay and bronze over the past twenty five years.
Among Buckman’s current professional affiliations include the National Sculpture Society, where she has exhibited at the 74th, 75th, 77th and the current 82nd annual exhibits at the Tampa Museum of Art, and Brookgreene Gardens, South Carolina where she was awarded The Elliot Gantz & Co. Foundry award for “Last Dance” a figure of a young woman. Buckman is also a member of The Portrait Society of America, she has recently been awarded third place for her life-size terra-cotta sculpture bust “Xavier “ in the 2014 Members Only juried exhibit and a Certificate of Excellence for her life-size terracotta “Best Friends” in the 2015 Portrait Society of America’s International Portrait Competition. She is also a finalist in the ARC Art Renewal Center 2015 international Exhibit. Buckman works in her studio in North Park, San Diego, California where she exhibits and teaches classes in life sculpture.
