Liane Whittum

United States

Liane Whittum has been drawing and painting as long as she can remember.  Her career began at 19 designing and painting for a furniture company based in Goffstown NH.  For three years she painted scenes of beaches, ships, flowers and wildlife on custom created pieces of furniture in acrylic paint. During this time she was also an artist assistant painting in acrylic and gouache on three dimensional sculptures.  Her time as an artist assistant spanned over 20 years.  During this time Liane acquired a mastery of painting with gouache and acrylic.  After her time with the furniture company, and working as an assistant she decided to heavily pursue her love of oil painting and focused on expanding her knowledge of the medium.  She was accepted into many juried shows and participated in outdoor exhibits.  After the birth of her daughter she decided to pursue her Bachelors degree and studied studio art at New England College.  She enrolled in every landscape drawing and painting course she could and during her last semester was a TA in the drawing I class in the art department.  After graduating, there was no question that she wanted to keep growing as an artist and learning about landscape painting.  It was her time spent in outside drawing classes at New England College that fueled her passion for plein air work.

Liane Whittum’s recent series of paintings are a reflection of her time spent traveling by car since moving to Hill New Hampshire.  Her work focuses on pastoral, industrial, and wild landscapes.  Liane also focuses heavily on still life work.  She transitions often between still life, landscape and plein air work, done primarily in oil paint in a classical realism style.  She gathers information on site and paints plein-air when composing landscape paintings.  Liane will often finish her paintings in her studio, which after consideration may be complete as a loose work, or become a more involved work of higher refinement.  “Plein air painting informs all of the studio pieces I create.  Nothing teaches you more about form and light than painting from life.”

Liane received her BA in Studio Art from New England College and is a juried member of the International Guild of Realism (IGOR), Newburyport Art Association member, and a juried member of the NH Art Association. Liane has painted many commissioned pieces purchased by private collectors, and her work has been carried in stores across New England including Pier 1 Imports.  Liane has won many awards including the Washington SQ Outdoor Exhibit Award and the Gamblin Material for a Landscape in Oil Award from the Salmagundi Club in NYC.
