The Young Architect

Come learn to paint the life size portrait in the birthplace of the Renaissance: Florence, Italy.   This course will focus on  building observation skills and learning a classical approach to create a portrait painting while working directly from the live model over an extended period of time.   A comprehensive vision of portrait painting will be addressed, including proportion, structure, artistic anatomy, and color theory.  Students will execute a drawing and then complete a oil painting using both historic methods and materials.  Engaging with the unique wealth of Florentine art becomes an important component of the course as studio time will supplemented by a series of visits to important museums and monuments throughout the city.

Matthew James Collins is one of the leading practitioners of the Sight-Size portraiture working today.  With over 20 years of teaching experience, Collins has formed generations of professional portrait painters.  In this 2 week course that involves 60 hours of studio time, students are introduced to the sight size method via portrait drawing and then proceed to work in oil.  Collins works alongside the students, actively demonstrating while closely following individual projects.  To ensure the quality and personal attention, the maximum class size is 3.
