The Dance of Life: Figure and Imagination in American Art, 1876–1917

Published on October 30, 2024

In an era of sweeping change following the Civil War, an ambitious generation of American artists adopted the human figure as their focus. Showcasing more than 100 studies related to major commissions for the Boston Public Library, Library of Congress, Pennsylvania State Capitol, and other civic institutions, The Dance of Life explores the American Renaissance, a pivotal yet neglected period in American art. On view are intimate pencil sketches, sensuous pastels, dynamic bronzes, and virtuosic oil studies by Edwin Austin Abbey, Edwin Blashfield, Daniel Chester French, Violet Oakley, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and John Singer Sargent—celebrated artists then and now. Displayed alongside are works by talents deserving of more attention, including Meta Warrick Fuller, Evelyn Longman, and Gari Melchers. Featuring vibrant artworks rarely seen in public, the exhibition reveals how artists shaped their visions, learned from one another, and developed a visual language that captivated a divided nation.

The exhibition runs from September 5, 2024 – January 5, 2025 at the Yale University Art Gallery, 1111 Chapel St., New Haven, CT 06510.

Revolution to Restoration: French Drawings from The Horvitz Collection

Published on October 24, 2024

Revolution to Restoration: French Drawings from The Horvitz Collection features approximately 90 drawings made from the 1770s through the 1850s, one of the most turbulent periods in French history.

During this time, France abolished the monarchy, established a republic, terrorized perceived political enemies, waged war across the continent, imposed an empire, and eventually reinstated the monarchy—and these are only a handful of the tumultuous episodes that occurred across this 80-year period. Despite this profound instability, the country’s cultural environment flourished, spurring a significant stylistic shift in artistic production. Artists moved away from the playful, decadent Rococo style toward the restrained and disciplined style, now known as Neoclassicism.

The exhibition runs from October 26, 2024 – January 6, 2025 at the Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60603.

French Neoclassical Paintings from The Horvitz Collection

Published on October 18, 2024

This exhibition focuses on Neoclassicism, an artistic style that emerged in the later 1700s and flourished through the 1820s, a period of tremendous political and social upheaval in France. Neoclassical painters looked to the art, architecture, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration, often as a lens through which to depict and comment upon contemporary events.

While these works were created more than 200 years ago and often depict ancient or mythological events, they also reference social and political challenges that remain relevant today.

The exhibition runs from October 19, 2024 – January 6, 2025 at the Art Institute of Chicago, 111 S Michigan Ave , Chicago Ill, 60603.

Figures of the Fool - From the Middle Ages to the Romantics

Published on October 10, 2024

This exhibition brings together over 300 works from 90 French, European and American institutions and takes visitors on a one-of-a-kind journey through Northern European art illuminating the profane aspects of the Middle Ages and revealing a fascinating era of surprising complexity. The exhibition explores the disappearance of the figure of the fool with the Enlightenment and the triumph of reason, and its resurgence at the end of the 18th century and all throughout the 19th. The fool then became a figure with which artists identified, wondering: ‘What if I were the fool?’

Figures of the Fool runs from October 16, 2024 – February 3, 2025 at the Louvre, 93 Rue de Rivoli, Paris, 75001, France.
