Beyond the Light: Identity and Place in Nineteenth-Century Danish Art
Published on January 19, 2023
Denmark in the nineteenth century experienced the disastrous fallout of the Napoleonic Wars, the devastating bombardment of Copenhagen, bankruptcy, and mounting antagonism with Germany. Yet, this sociopolitical and economic tumult also gave rise to a vibrant cultural and philosophical environment for nineteenth-century Danish artists. Beyond the Light places the drawings, oil sketches, and paintings created by these artists firmly in this period, one that witnessed the transformation of a once-powerful Denmark into a small, somewhat marginalized country at the edge of Europe. Danish artists forged a close-knit community during this time, and the artworks they created explore notions of place, identity and belonging, and what it means to travel and return home.
The exhibition features approximately 100 works from The Met collection, SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark, and several American collections, and highlights such artists as Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, Christen Købke, Constantin Hansen, Martinus Rørbye, and Vilhelm Hammershøi as well as lesser-known figures like Anton Melbye, Johan Thomas Lundbye, Peter Christian Skovgaard, and Heinrich Gustav Ferdinand Holm, among others.
The exhibition runs from January 26 - April 14, 2023 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Avenue, NY, New York 10028.

This class will introduce students to the process and techniques of figurative sculpture. Students will sculpt from a live model over this ten-week course, with an emphasis on gesture, proportions, anatomy, and model likeness, and will complete one 24-inch figure in clay. The concepts of the golden section and dynamic symmetry will be introduced, along with historical design elements and the discovery of anatomical rhythms.
Throughout this class, students will be guided by instructor-led demonstrations and individual and group critiques, which integrate authentic ancient Greek and 19th-century figurative sculpture principles. Complementing the class are discussions about the daily practice in a studio environment, including the use and care of materials, and the phenomenological approach to observing figures through clay.

Portrait Painting on Copper with Master Artist Steven Assael
Published on January 10, 2023
Dates - Friday, February 24th & Sunday, 26th, 2023
Time- 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location - Kline Academy of Art, 3264 Motor Ave, LA 90034
Historically, copper supports were for many artists a practical and relatively simple way to prepare for oil painting. Artists such as Rubens and Rembrandt painted on copper. Examples through the centuries that have survived, exhibit great luster and remain as fresh as the day they were painted. Paintings on copper do not suffer from the same types of degradation as is the case for paintings on canvas or wood.
This workshop will provide a demonstration painted from the live model. Steven will demonstrate that copper can allow for glowing transparent shadows and also give the feeling of light that jumps from the surface.
Students will learn:
-Learning traditional methods of preparing copper plates for oil paint.
-Learning Steven's personal methods of preparing copper plates for oil paint.
-Formal instruction: construction of the head, proportion, value, light logic, shadow, etc.
-Introduction to archivability.
-Understanding the luminous jewel-like qualities of painting on copper with oil.
-Personalized instruction.
