N. C. Wyeth: New Perspectives
Published on February 28, 2020
This exhibition brings together approximately 50 large-scale paintings of N. C. Wyeth, the patriarch of one of America’s most prominent artistic families. Spanning several decades, these works evolve from the American impressionist style of the 1910s to the regionalist realism of the 1930s and 40s associated with artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood.
Many of Wyeth’s grand images bring to life the stories of Treasure Island, The Last of the Mohicans, and The Boy’s King Arthur—books published as part of Charles Scribner’s Sons Illustrated Classics series that are still well-known today. Despite his fame as an illustrator, however, Wyeth deserves much greater appreciation for his little-known fine art paintings. Thus, New Perspectives revises his reputation by also highlighting his private work, which reveals Wyeth’s love of nature and the contemporary American scene. Together with his illustrations, these paintings bear witness to Wyeth’s passion for color, light, and narrative, and make a case for his inclusion as a major painter of the early 20th century.
The exhibition runs from February 8 to May 3, 2020 at the The Taft Museum of Art, 316 Pike St, Cincinnati OH 45202.

Millet and Modern Art: From Van Gogh to Dalí
Published on February 26, 2020
Millet and Modern Art: From Van Gogh to Dalí is a groundbreaking exhibition that examines, for the first time, the international legacy of French painter Jean-François Millet. Millet was a pioneer in developing innovative imagery of rural peasantry, landscapes, and nudes, and his work had a deep impact on later generations of artists. In the late 19th century he was arguably the best-known modern painter, and his works sold for the highest prices of any modern pictures at auction. Today Millet is less well known, and this exhibition seeks to revive his importance and recognize his radicalism.
The exhibition runs from February 16 - May 17, 2020 at the Saint Louis Art Museum, 1 Fine Arts Dr, Saint Louis, MO 63110.

True to Nature: Open-Air Painting in Europe, 1780–1870
Published on February 21, 2020
An integral part of art education in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, painting en plein air was a core practice for avant-garde artists in Europe. Intrepid artists such as Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, John Constable, Simon Denis, Jules Coignet, and André Giroux, were highly skilled at quickly capturing effects of light and atmosphere. They made, sometimes arduous journeys to paint their landscapes in person at breathtaking sites, ranging from the Baltic coast and Swiss Alps, to the streets of Paris and ruins of Rome. Drawing on new scholarship, this exhibition of some 100 oil sketches made outdoors across Europe during that time, includes several recently discovered works and explores issues such as attribution, chronology, and technique.
The exhibition runs from February 2 - March 3, 2020 at the National Gallery of Art, Constitution Ave NW, Washington D.C., 20001.

Transitional Nature
Published on February 20, 2020
Cultural identity in the United States has been long intertwined with its magnificent landscapes, from the dense forests of New England to the open terrain of the West. These landscapes extol the unique beauty of this country and relate to the first significant art movement in the United States, known as the Hudson River School. The artists who painted these American landscapes worked during a time of increasing industrialization and growth of technology—not a coincidence of history but a lens on ecocritical thinking of the time. Modern industry changed the culture and economic future of this country, but also gave rise to concerns about the preservation of a natural environment often described as a Garden of Eden. While much of Transitional Nature focuses on U.S. landscapes, depictions of Greenland and Ecuador exemplify the international travel undertaken by nineteenth-century artists in further pursuit of untrammeled terrain. Artists working today frequently address the beauty and complexity of landscape, drawing our attention to environment and ecology. Transitional Nature will feature a selection of works by contemporary artists that will connect in powerful ways the past of the Hudson River School to the present.
The exhibition runs from January 25 - May 17, 2020 at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, 10975 SW 17th St, Miami, FL 33199.

ARC Gallery List
Published on February 10, 2020
The Art Renewal Center has recently added a list of representational art galleries to the website. Some of these businesses focus solely on Contemporary Realism and others carry a wide variety of works including Contemporary Realism, but in some cases also antique or Modernist work and even glasswork, woodwork, ceramics and other forms of merchandise. However, the one thing all these galleries have in common is that they support 21st Century Representational Art and include works by living artists who paint and/or sculpt in the traditional method.
The goal of this list is to help connect clients, galleries and artists to one another for the benefit of all!
If you know of additional galleries that sell or exhibit Representational Art by living artists, please contact us so that we can include them in this listing.
