New ARC Living Master
Published on August 29, 2019
ARC is pleased to welcome Ana Schmidt as a new ARC Living Master™!
Ana Schmidt is a figurative painter known for her realistic depictions of urban landscapes. In the artist´s paintings the presence of graffiti, urban abandoned space, rubbish and decay, as well as distant viewing platforms, create a sense of an empty land, even banal at times. “For me, these urban landscapes are in addition to real environments, environments of signs with metaphorical meanings. The search for pictures within landscapes on the edge of cities and other man-made places is one of the themes of my paintings."

Bartolomé Bermejo: Master of the Spanish Renaissance

Bringing together seven of his rare works, six of which have never been seen in the UK, this exhibition explores how Bermejo drew inspiration from Netherlandish painting, using illusionistic effects and a rich colour palette, to become one of the greatest artists of the Spanish Renaissance.
The exhibition runs from June 12 – September 29 2019 at the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London, WC2N 5DN United Kingdom.

Velázquez, Rembrandt, Vermeer. Parallel Visions
Published on August 8, 2019
Comprising 72 works from the Prado, the Rijksmuseum and 15 other institutions, this exhibition offers a reflection on the traditions of Spanish and Dutch painting from the 17th century.
The traditional idea of the art produced in different parts of Europe is that it is notably different: that Velázquez, for example, is “very Spanish” and Rembrandt “very Dutch”. This viewpoint is based on the excessive influence that 19th- and 20th-century nationalist mindsets and ideologies have had on our way of understanding art.
In the 17th century both countries saw the emergence of an aesthetic that departed from idealism and which focused on the real appearance of things and the manner of representing it. In their works the artists represented in this exhibition did not express the “essence” of their nations but rather gave form to the ideas and approaches that they shared with an international community of creators.
