Landscape Category Sponsored in Memory of Leah F. Waichulis
Published on June 28, 2019
The Art Renewal Center dedicates this year’s top Landscape awards to the artistry and memory of Leah F. Waichulis. An award-winning artist and educator, Leah’s paintings and drawings of interiors and landscapes combined direct observation with rich memory and emotion to convey an authentic sense of place. Her works continue to be celebrated by critics and connoisseurs of this genre and have garnered much attention, both nationally and internationally, on the walls of prestigious galleries as well as the pages of respected publications such as American Artist, Artist’s Magazine, Drawing, and International Artist.
In addition to her successes at the easel, Leah had generously dedicated much of her career to improving contemporary art education. She was one of the founders of The Ani Art Academies, assisted in much of the curriculum design, and served as both instructor and technical advisor from 2011 until her untimely passing this year. It is our hope that the excellence found in the stunning displays of skill and creativity that populate this Salon category act as a fitting tribute to a true artist that has left us far too soon.

The workshop will consist of a long pose with an emphasis on rendering and learning to tie in structural anatomy with surface form. Participants will also be drawing quick figure sketches to practice capturing the significant anatomical structures responsible for the gesture. During the workshop, Iliya Mirochnik will demonstrate drawing principles for the entire class and provide anatomical explanations and diagrams for each participant individually.
