Classical Realism Journal News
August 27, 2015
Recently, we received a letter from an aspiring artist: I am wondering if the Classical Realism Journal is still being published? I am retiring on August 26, and I am going to start painting again. I have always loved realism; it talks to me. I took drawing and painting classes in high school and college, but I was never taught anything about fat over lean or glazing, for example. I was taught only the wet on wet method of painting, and frequently the instructor would comment "try to be more abstract". I have been reading everything I can, as I am going to have to learn on my own. From the examples I have seen of the Classical Realism Journal, it seems like it would be very helpful, and I would love to subscribe to it. Thank you. Suzanne Newberry
We are republishing the full series in the months to come. To read articles from the first issue of the Classical Realism Journal on ARC, please click here. Last Chance to See Leighton's Flaming June in NYC
August 26, 2015
At the end of his career, the British artist Frederic Leighton painted the now-iconic image of a sleeping woman in a vivid orange gown. On loan from the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico, Flaming June makes its first public appearance in New York City, exhibited alongside the Frick's four full-length portraits by James McNeill Whistler, another major proponent of "art for art's sake." The Frick Collection is located on 1865 Broadway at 61st Street, New York, NY 10023 and the exhibit ends September 6, 2015. |

3 New Works Added to MEAM Exhibition
August 21, 2015
Three new works have been added to the list of paintings to be exhibited in the traveling exhibition for the 2014/2015 ARC Salon. Today we are adding the Most Ambitious Runner Up, The Scrum, by Christopher Pothier, and two Honorable Mentions, one from the Still Life Category, The Fat of The Land, by David Cheifetz, and one from the Landscape Category, Forgiveness, by Ken Salaz.
"In my painting of Forgiveness, the landscapes, which fill our world and eyes, can be perfect reflections of our inner psychology. This painting was created from studies during a violent storm off the coast of Connecticut. I painted on the shore, almost being blown away myself by the tempest. Just when I was getting ready to pack up and call it quits; the sun broke through the thick clouds and infused the whole world below with light. In many ways, that is the experience of forgiveness, when it comes, or is given, light is shone upon those standing below and the storm that rages in our hearts is quieted." - Ken Salaz To view newly added write-ups on these works, please visit the page we've created for the exhibition by clicking here. |

Three New Works Added for Live ARC Salon
August 14, 2015
Three new works have been added to the list of paintings to be exhibited in the traveling exhibition for the 2014/2015 ARC Salon. Today we are adding the Best Trompe L'oeil Runner Up, Dragon Fruit, by Noah Layne, and two Honorable Mentions, one from the figurative category, The Purity of Imagination and Color, by Leslie Adams, and one from the animal category, Morning Rounds, by Gayla Salvati.
The Purity of Imagination and Color is a work from the solo exhibition, Leslie Adams, Drawn from Life at the Toledo Museum of Art, which coincided with the exhibition, Manet, Portraying Life. This self-portrait, in addition to being her homage to Manet's A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, presents a treasured childhood memory. Here we encounter the unexpected juxtaposition of a young girl in an adult universe. The viewer is transported into a kaleidoscopic crayola-colored world of a 1970's American bar. Sneaking olives from her father's martini, she sits at the bar intently copying provocative Pop art images from cocktail napkins, as though they are Old Master drawings. She pauses and gazes into the mirror, imagining. At that moment, she reminds us, "We are such stuff as dreams are made on" - Shakespeare To view newly added write-ups on these works, please visit the page we've created for the exhibition by clicking here. |
