John D Cogan is an American painter, born 24 February 1953. He lives in Farmington New Mexico with his wife Karen.

John paints almost exclusively in acrylic, working on canvas and panels. His goal is to capture the splendor of creation in the landscapes of the American Southwest. His style consists of thin underpaintings and thicker finishes, rich pigments, glazes, and attention to detail. He emphasizes is color and the transient effects of light.

John has exhibited at the Grand Canyon Conservancy’s Celebration of Art from 2009 through 2022. In 2012 John’s painting “Out of the Depths” was selected to become part of the permanent collection of the Grand Canyon. John has served as Artist in Residence on both the South and North Rims.

John participated in Zion National Park’s Plein Air Invitational, from 2010 through 2021, winning multiple awards. The 2013 book, Art of the National Parks features John’s paintings in the section on Zion National Park. John was Zion Artist-in-Residence during April 2019.

John’s paintings are part of the permanent collections of the Grand Canyon, the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, Raymond James Financial, Xanterra Corporation, Zion National Park, Bernalillo County, Citizens Bank, Conoco Phillips, McGraw Hill, San Juan College, and Eastern New Mexico University, among others. John has 27 pieces in the collection of the Sultanate of Oman.

In 2019 John was designated an Associate Living Master™ at the Art Renewal Center, an honor that places him among the best representational artists of this century.
