Jeanne Rosier Smith grew up painting, but like so many other artists, she didn't initially realize that art was something one could do 'for a living.' She studied art at Georgetown University, then went on to earn a Ph.D. in English and teach college English for ten years. She first discovered pastel when a box of Nupastels arrived in the mail from an uncle in Massachusetts, 25 years ago. "You might enjoy these," he said. Little by little, that box changed her life. Pastels, which combine the immediacy of drawing and painting with intuitive color mixing right on the page, felt like a perfect fit. She furthered her studies at the Ducret School of Art in Plainfield, NJ and at the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts. In 2003 she made the switch to full time professional art. She considers her greatest training to be the nearly twenty years she has spent teaching and training others to paint.
She is currently represented by nine galleries and her work is in collections on six continents. After teaching in-person workshops at home, nationally and internationally for almost two decades Jeanne now offers her workshops and videos on demand via subscription through Her subjects are diverse but always focus on what she loves. An avid swimmer and beach vacationer, she is best known for her seascapes and recognized for her New England landscapes in all seasons. Smith is a designated Eminent Pastelist with the International Association of Pastel Societies. She is a Copley Society Master Artist, and signature member of the Pastel Society of America and the American Society of Marine Artists. She has served as an educational consultant to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where she has also given pastel demonstrations and gallery talks. She has recently been featured in Plein Air Magazine (June 2022) and with a solo show at the historic St Botolph Club in Boston. She has won many top national awards, has both written for and been featured in numerous national art publications, and exhibited at the Massachusetts State House, the Guild of Boston Artists, the National Arts Club and museums around the country.
