Charcoal, sanguine, chalk, & pierre noire on paper

  • Honorable Mention / Fully From Life
  • First Place ($2,500 Cash Award) / Drawing

This drawing represents the aria, In Trutina, from the opera, Carmina Burana. It is one of the numerous preparatory drawings for the monumental work, Carmina Burana, that was exhibited at the European Museum of Modern Art (the MEAM) in Barcelona, Spain, as part of my retrospective: "Shane Wolf: A Tour de Force" in early 2022.

As with all of my work, this piece was completed entirely from life, namely with 3 models over many days in studio. One of the male models rotated between 2 of the poses. When these models first came together their power was almost overwhelming. My charcoal could barely keep up with my excitement as the image came to life on the paper.

I owe a great deal to the wonderful models who helped create this piece. Drawing from life should be priority number one. Everything else flows from there.
