Giulia by Phoebe-Louise Stewart Carter

A traditional portrait, painted from life, of a recognisable model in the Florentine painting scene, called Giulia. She is dressed in a silk embroidared cape, which I kept abstracted to maintain the focus on her face. I picked this model because of her striking appearence. Her pearlish pale skin and rich black hair reminded me of many of Ramon Casas' muses or even Sargent's 'Madam X'. I used many richly coloured transarent pigments in the first stages so as I layered the pale tones in her skin and darks in her hair I could maintain the richness of colour hidden beneath.
