The model for this portait came this day to pose for a 3 hour head study. During his break he reached over and grabbed the cane I had resting next to him. He leaned forward and started talking to me. When I looked up from cleaning my palette I said "ISAAC DON'T MOVE!" This pose was perfect. I composed the background to include a religious statue I call "the Saint". The model for this portrait is an amateur biblical scholar. Thus the name "The Scholar and the Saint" I decided to include myself reflected in the mirror as I was painting him.
