“My painting, Exhalation is part of a continuing underwater series that I have been working on for the past few years. My idea began as a simple idea of composing figures underwater and playing with different levels of light diffused through water in order to establish a sense of atmosphere. I have always had a fascination with water. In these paintings I used it as a source of imagery to convey a sense of wonder and fear of the unknown, while drawing parallels to human conditions such as grief, confusion, and acceptance. In this painting, I wanted it to evoke a sense of peace and calmness, but also uncertainty. However, as a painter, I try to leave most of the interpretation of these meanings up to the viewer.” – RYAN CHAPMAN
