“I've always had an affinity for rivers and river bottoms. Rivers are a good place to relax, collect my thoughts and of course paint during which a sense of peace flows over me, like a cleansing of the spirit.

Winter Snag is a scene on the Mississippi River just north of downtown St. Paul, Minnesota, with the old abandoned power plant in the background. The tree was 'hung up' in the partially frozen river and provided an interesting subject.

I did several quick pencil sketches to work out the basic composition before doing a plein air oil study. In the studio enlargement I refined the shapes and augmented my palette. I introduced subtle hues of blues, alizarin crimson and hints of yellow to give a glow to the snow. Cobalt violet helped give the ethereal quality that I was after.

On a philosophical note: We're all just a 'snag' in the river of life, 'hung up' for a brief time in the reality of the present.” – MIKE D. WODNICK
