He was educated in Spain, under \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=466\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EMadrazo\u003C/a\u003E at Madrid, and his long series of portraits shows the influence of \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=132\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EVel\u0026aacute;zquez\u003C/a\u003E and the Spanish realists. In 1869 he won a medal of honor at Paris, where he became one of the leading artists of his day, and in 1888 he became professor of painting at the \u003Ca href=\u0022http://www.bartleby.com/65/ec/Ecoledes.html\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EEcole des Beaux-Arts\u003C/a\u003E. In May 1905 he succeeded \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=103\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EPaul Dubois\u003C/a\u003E as director.
