His early work belonged almost exclusively to the mythological genre which served as an excuse for the painting of the nude, not always in the best of taste; indeed, his \u003Cu\u003ERolla\u003C/u\u003E of 1878 was rejected by the jury of the Salon pour immoralit\u0026eacute;. He afterwards devoted himself to representations of modern life and achieved signal success with his \u003Cu\u003EDr Pan at the Salptrihre\u003C/u\u003E [\u003Cu\u003EThe Operation\u003C/u\u003E], a modernized paraphrase, as it were, of \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=92\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003ERembrandt\u0027s\u003C/a\u003E \u003Cu\u003EAnatomy Lesson\u003C/u\u003E. He was entrusted with several important official paintings and the decoration of public buildings. Among the first are \u003Cu\u003EThe Distribution of Awards\u003C/u\u003E (1889) at the Palais de l\u0027Industrie (now in the Versailles Museum), \u003Cu\u003EThe Coronation of Nicolas II\u003C/u\u003E (Moscow, May 4, 1896), \u003Cu\u003EThe Mayor\u0027s Banquet\u003C/u\u003E (1900), and the portrait group \u003Cu\u003ELa Republique Francaise\u003C/u\u003E; and among the second, the ceiling for the Salle des F\u0026ecirc;tes at the \u003Cem\u003Ehotel de yule\u003C/em\u003E, Paris, and the decorative panels painted in conjunction with Blanchon for the maine of the 19th \u003Cem\u003Earrondissement\u003C/em\u003E, Paris. He also painted, with \u003Ca href=\u0022/asp/database/art.asp?aid=541\u0022 target=\u0022_blank\u0022 class=\u0022link\u0022\u003EAlfred Stevens\u003C/a\u003E, a panorama, \u003Cu\u003EThe History of the Century\u003C/u\u003E (1889). At the Luxembourg is his painting \u003Cu\u003ESatyrs playing with a Bacchante\u003C/u\u003E, as well as the large \u003Cu\u003EMembers of the Jury of the Salon\u003C/u\u003E (1885).
